More Guns Make Us Safer Who doesn't want to be safe? The people who support stricter gun control laws argue that having guns can make them safer and have protection whenever they want. The numbers don't lie. In a survey by the Pew Research Center, 48% of Americans voted that the reason why they own a gun is for protection. 79% of male gun owners and 80% of female gun owners said owning a gun made them feel safer and 64% of people living in a home in which someone else owns a gun felt safer.
Having a gun around you can be beneficial. If someone is robbing your house, you can use a gun to scare them away. If someone is threatening to kill you, you can shoot him in self-defense. According to Gun Owners of America, there are three reasons why Americans should be able to own guns to save lives: guns save more lives than they take, concealed carry laws help reduce crimes, and criminals avoid armed citizens.
Guns are used 2.5 million times a year in self-defense- or about 6,850 times a day. The reason why the number is so big is because the police are not going to be near you every moment. As many as 200,000 women use a gun every year to defend themselves against sexual abuse. States which passed concealed carry laws reduced their murder rate by 8.5%, rapes by 5%, aggravated assaults by 7% and robbery by 3%.
What is interesting about concealed carry laws is: a citizen in Florida is far more likely to be attacked by an alligator than to be assaulted by a concealed carry holder. States which passed concealed carry laws reduced their murder rate by 8.5%, rapes by 5%, aggravated assaults by 7% and robbery by 3%
Multiple reports show that burglars are less likely to break into a house if a household owns at least one gun. Also, 3/5 of felons polled agreed that a criminal is not going to mess around with a victim he knows is armed with a gun.
In a New York Times article, the author stresses that 58% of Americans voted that they would feel uncomfortable if their house didn’t have a gun. Americans also say it is more important to protect the right of Americans to own guns than for the government to limit access to firearms. Safety is a major concern for most Americans.
